Wallpaper* Design Awards 2011

Australian designer Marc Newson joined forces with luxury speedboat purveyor Riva to reinterpret its iconic Aquariva model. The craft was given an innovative update, including a wrap-around glass windscreen and a reimagined silhouette for the transom (at the stern). For the ultimate finish, Newson worked with phenolic composite, a textile-based laminate resembling wood, though much sturdier, and replaced the stainless steel and chrome accents with anodised aluminium. With a bow thruster (for manoeuvrability) and a cutting-edge electronic transmission, the limited edition of 22 boats, available from the Gagosian Gallery, has certainly made waves.
Key features: A 33ft super-yacht marketed as a work of art, this update of the 2001 Aquariva dips into the Italian yacht manufacturer's history to blend style cues and 1950s glamour with hi-tech functionality
About the designer: London-based since 1997 (after stints in Tokyo and Paris), Marc Newson is lauded for designs ranging from timepieces and household objects to restaurant and jet interiors
