Wallpaper* Design Awards 2011

Despite being fully integrated with the original modernist vision of the automotive city, the car park didn't really turn into a particularly thrilling archetype. Perhaps mindful of these historic failings, 1111 Lincoln Road on Miami Beach is designed not just as a place to park cars, but as a generator of innovation and culture. Herzog & de Meuron brings its characteristic bravado to the all-concrete structure, using diagonal columns to support the slabs and playing with height to create a looming, jagged form. Overseen by Miami developer and art collector Robert Wennett, the garage meets the ground with a ribbon of retail and is designed to be reappropriated and reused as necessary.
Key features: Art, culture, commerce and automotion, all wrapped up in a seriously sculptural concrete statement
Architects' previous work:Tate Modern, London; Olympic Stadium, Beijing; Caixa Forum, Madrid
Based: Basel
