Design Awards 2010

Konstantin Grcic is a man who tirelessly experiments, reinvents and improves. Meticulous as an industrial designer by training, he applies the same level of attention and detail to all that he turns his hand to, from larger pieces of furniture to smaller accessories, leaving them all with an unmistakable Grcic stamp. It’s no surprise, then, that companies large and small, far and wide, fall over themselves to work with him. This year, he has been more prolific than ever and pushed boundaries in every direction. One of our Salone del Mobile highlights was Grcic’s ‘Monza’ chair for Plank, a simple, Scandinavian-inspired wood construction with a contoured plastic back and armrest ‘for comfort and colour’. Other seminal projects this year include his Breuer-inspired tubular 'Pipe' desks and chairs, a collaboration that united the mass production of Muji with the skilled craftsmanship of Thonet; the wing-like aluminium ‘Table B’ for BD Barcelona; understated but distinctive ‘Accento’ cutlery for Serafino Zani; and his reinvention of the swivel chair, ‘360’, a work chair and high stool for Magis, designed to encourage ‘dynamic sitting’.
