04. Best new hotel

Steeped in history and brimming with original frescoes, bas-reliefs, stucco finishes and hand-painted silk wallpapers, the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence blends ancient charm and Renaissance art with hi-tech modern comforts. It has 116 guest rooms and suites, with no two that look alike; they are housed either in a former 16th-century convent or in a 15th-century palazzo. Interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, responsible for the renovation of Monte Carlo's Hotel Hermitage and London's Sofitel St James, has created a sense of comfort within the grandeur of the surroundings. What really steals the show are the hotel's 4.5 hectares of botanical gardens, a peaceful urban haven only a ten-minute walk from the Duomo. Il Pagio restaurant, with an opulent dining room, serves local specialities and exceptional Italian wines.
