A true blue founding member of the limited edition design old guard, Wendell Castle – the septuagenarian stateside designer famed for his sculptural, high-polished, amorphous objects – welcomed us into his home for W*129. For the full story pick up a copy of the latest issue but here we wanted to show Castle's latest crop of designs, which went on show last year at Barry Friedman Gallery.
Some things improve with age, and Castle’s high-shine, super-smooth objects, with their vague 70’s aesthetic, mark a return to form for one of the design world’s most important citizens.
Departing from wood – his longstanding material of choice- Castle has produced a range of furniture in an unexpected range of high-tech materials. From his spindly, polychromed fiberglass Black Widow chairs to the super-space age, stainless steel Abilene Rocking Chair – Castle’s immaculate approach has never seemed more ‘now’.
