Director of lighting at Arup for the past six years, architectural lighting designer Rogier van der Heide was, in March of this year, appointed Vice President of Philips Design and Chief Design Officer Lighting at Royal Philips Electronics. The Multi-award winning Dutch designer has worked with the likes of Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, Michael Graves and Cesar Pelli to name but a few and is known across the industry for his less than conventional approach to lighting design.
Van der Heide's surreal Crystal Palace installation, 'Dream Cloud' features a cluster of thousands of tiny crystals suspended above the ground. The crystals are illuminated by 'narrow beams of moonlight', creating an environment which, as van der Heide explains, 'elevates guests above the clouds, where the shimmering crystals, bathing in cool blue moonlight, make a dream come true'.
