Published in conjunction with the opening of the Getty Museum’s newly renovated and expanded photography galleries, this book collects many gems from more than 450 photographs gifted to the museum by the Los Angeles-based collectors Nancy and Bruce Berman. The Bermans were one of the earliest and most far-sighted couples to champion contemporary American photography, and this book contains many iconic images by the likes of William Christenberry, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston alongside equally fascinating and powerful shots by lesser-known photographers such as Jack D. Teemer Jr, David Husom and Camilo José Vergara. The uniting theme is a vision of the real America: the buildings, signage, vistas (and backyards) and the people in the heartland of this vast country. Simultaneously grand and intimate, this is a vision of a vanishing America, living on in photography.
