One of the young designers pushing Brazilian design forward is Fernando Prado, head designer at Sao Paolo-based lighting specialist Lumini and winner – with his mechanically simple yet intuitively inventive Lift lamp – of this year’s IDEA/Brasil Gold Award.

Constructed from a straightforward support bar and a moveable wooden shade, Lift can operate as floor lamp, reading light, or ceiling illumination. Prado’s other work, like the Bossa pendant, a cantilevered structure that pops a bulb in or out of the shade allowing for a change in the focus, direction, and intensity of light, is similarly interactive.
