Bags of Goodwill, London

Amidst the vogue of all things eco-friendly, some remarkably forward thinking and imaginative projects have surfaced with not a scrap of hemp or raffia in sight. One of our favourite London stores, twentytwentyone sent out blank Fairtrade, organic certified cotton bags to 40 of the world’s greatest designers, asking them to decorate or deface as they saw fit, the only condition being that each reflected their own design philosophy and had consideration towards responsible design.

The aim of the project is to raise as much money as possible for the Fairtrade Foundation by auctioning off the bags throughout the London Design Festival, from twentytwentyone’s showroom on River Street and given both the calibre of design talent involved and the interesting range of creations, a small fortune should be raised.

It’s clearly a testament to how much designers are striving to incorporate ethical and eco-aware practices into their work, and also in how much esteem twentytwentyone is regarded around the design community that the contributors are of such rank: Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic, Giulio Cappellini and the seemingly ubiquitous Ross Lovegrove to name a sprinkling of the people who’ve participated.
