The Fourth Plinth Project
Art
Having sat dormant for many a year, the Fourth Plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square has garnered interest from a plethora of renowned artists eager to fill the void. With Marc Quinn’s evocative sculpture 'Alison Lapper Pregnant' and Thomas Schutte’s ‘Model for a Hotel’ having already taken pride of place, it’s now the turn of another brave artist to flaunt their wares alongside resident historic greats.
Recently six artists were shortlisted as possible candidates for the next commission. Jeremy Deller, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Yinka Shonibare and Bob and Roberta Smith are all vying to occupy the Fourth Plinth , and are displaying their models in the National Gallery until 30 March 2008.

One of the main driving forces behind the Fourth Plinth Programme is to involve the public in the art debate and are invited to post comments on the six proposals during the exhibition. The winning artist will be announced by the Mayor of London in Spring and will be installed in 2009 after our much cherished Schutte creation is taken down.
