Every year we look forward to the D&AD awards ceremony where we can see one of the world’s most comprehensive round-ups of outstanding design and advertising. It’s a perfect opportunity to review the varying directions different media channels have travelled and flex our trend forecasting skills in each field.
And last night’s ceremony was no disappointment. Yellow Pencils are awarded as a sign of excellence and there tends to be no limit to the number, whilst the coveted Black Pencils are awarded sparingly (in 2003, none were given) for supremely outstanding design, and it’s these that everyone holds their breath for.
Out of more than 25,000 pieces of work entered this year, two black pencils were awarded. The first for Nike+ (www.nikeplus.com) by R/GA in the ‘New Uses of Websites’ category, the second in the ‘Illustration: Press Advertising’ category for ‘War Orphans’ by Kolle Rebbe Werbeagentur GmbH.
Explaining the judges’ decision, D&AD President Tony Davidson said, “Nike+ challenges its category. It’s a totally integrated consumer experience that redefines the running industry, while the simple idea behind the campaign for ‘War Orphans’ made the judges’ decision easy. Naïve family wall paintings they may be, but seeing where shells of bullets have shattered the images is a powerful and easily understood metaphor.”
