Areaware: Design to Go, New York

Founded in 2004, Areaware is one of the more exciting additions to New Yorks burgeoning design retail scene.

With an agenda to bring some of the coolest, functional design items to the fore, Areaware is all about making design accessible, interactive and transportable - an ethos which has spawned their latest pop-up store-cum-exhibition, the aptly titled Design To Go.

Opened last week and occupying Blank SL8 - a new retail space set within in the expansive surrounds of New Yorks Port Authority Bus Terminal - the exhibition, which is open until the 26th September, will be showcasing some of the best up and coming (and already here) design names in the city.

Our own highlights, include untreated wooden torches from Jonas Damon, high-shine zoo animal jewellery from Kiel Mead and gradual-coloured stacking table blocks from Paul Loebach.

Produced in conjunction with the Times Square Alliance and the Fashion Centre Bid, and sold as a travel supply store and a souvenir shop hybrid, Areawares goal is to promote local designers and alternative transportation in New York. Work on show comes from a range of sources including Malin & Goaetz, KIOSK, KOR and of course our very own Wallpaper* City Guides.
