How does your culture/background affect the designs you come up with?
I am Indian by birth and training but have worked in Switzerland and now live in Holland. I have also travelled extensively. Of course this idea of being a cultural nomad affects my work but I don’t see it as being influences from particular countries – I believe in the idea of different expressions from beyond national borders.

Do you believe that heritage is an important part of design?
Heritage is very important. You can’t create a future without having a past. You have to have a firm grounding to take a leap forward

How far would you go to source your materials when designing?
I spend a lot of time finding the right material for the right process. But there is no such thing as the perfect material – every material has to be taken in the right context.

Have you spent time in Sweden? What Swedish qualities of Hastens do you think you’ve taken most on board with designing your bedroom?
I have worked a lot in Sweden and I relate to them a lot. Especially their respect for nature and sustainability as well as their ability to create a language that will last for a long time.

What did you find most impressive about the Hastens bed?
The feeling of ultimate comfort – both physically and psychologically.

Where do you see the future of design/the design of beds of the future?
No one knows how to predict the future. The future is what we see today.

Do you have a favourite place for inspiration?
No one place inspires me. Obviously some places inspire me more than others but there isn’t one that is absolute. If that was the case my life would be simple, I’d just buy a one-way ticket and live there forever and ever

What is the most luxurious place you’ve ever slept?
The most luxurious thing today is being surrounded by nature and not contaminated by technology - but still knowing it is in the background. To me I think the ability to connect and disconnect is the ultimate luxury.
