It’s hard to believe that Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon only started his individual career in 2004. His bold, individual style has been paramount in the current trend to transcend the borders between art and design, while his impressive client list includes Arquitect Edition, Benetton, David Gill, Adidas and Camper. The large-scale sculpture (pictured) is being made for his Bisazza installation at the Superstudio piu during the fair. The elements themselves represent Hayon’s personal cosmology but the installation is intended to break with the traditional use of the Bisazza mosaics and explore the possibilities of the elements. ‘My intention was to mix art forms with industrial applications,’ explains Hayon.
What else are you presenting at this year’s Salone de Mobile?
New furniture for the Showtime Bd Collection will be shown at the fairground; a show of my work for Metalarte, Artquitect and BD will be at venues across the city; and a chandelier done in collaboration with Swarovski will be shown at the Crystal Palace.
How many years have you been attending the Salone?
As a viewer for 5 years, showing work, for the past 2 or 3 years.
What are you most looking forward to about being in Milan this year for the Salone?
It’s a great moment to see people, to meet up with friends. Actually, that’s the part I look forward to the most.
What are you dreading, if anything, about this year’s fair?
Lack of time.
