Design Awards preview: day 3

The countdown to the Wallpaper* Design Awards has begun and every day during the run-up to the awards ceremony we are presenting the shortlist for the ten International Judges' Awards, exclusively on Wallpaper.com. Day 3 sees the contenders for best new restaurant. All winners will be announced on the 11th of January.

Canteen, London
Since Lord Foster's slick glass development opened adjacent to London's Spitalfields Market, trendy shoppers and sharp-suited lawyers have been dining at classy new eaterie Canteen. Typically British dishes with a modern twist, including five varieties of roast, are served from 8am to 11pm. The fine interiors and oak furniture come courtesy of award-winning designers BarberOsgerby.

Gilt, New York
Patrick Jouin has designed Gilt in a series of sumptuous, historic rooms in The New York Palace Hotel. Dominated by a lilac, oyster-shaped structure and a white Corian bar, the restaurant resembles something from a futuristic film set. Awe-inspiring dishes by chef Christopher Lee are served in the theatrical interiors, which are beautifully complemented by Jouin's custom-made furniture.

Kirketon, Sydney
The Ingram brothers of the much missed International are back with Sydney's decadent Kirketon Dining Room & Bar. Those savouring chef Jocelyn Riviere's French brasserie menu in the hot chocolate-hued room love the flattering pink lights that only just illuminate each table. The vibe is similarly swanky in the bar area; the booths are made for late nights nursing the superb cocktails.

Kungsholmen, Stockholm
Seven food stations (sushi, salad, soup, bread, bistro, grill and ice cream) serve up a selection of goodies courtesy of dynamic duo Melker Andersson and Danyel Couet, the brains behind successful restaurants F12, Grill and Restaurangen. At Kungsholmen the focus is on the freshest ingredients, cooked to perfection. Equally fresh is the hip crowd and the smart Thomas Sandell-designed interior.

Müzede Changa, Istanbul
Six years after opening the ever-popular Changa, restaurateurs Tarik Bayazit and Savas Ertunc have opened an equally slick sequel, Müzede Changa. Architect Aysen Savas dreamt up the 'glass cube' that houses the restaurant; the 1960s- and 1970s-inspired interiors were designed by the award-winning Autoban design team; and chef Peter Gordon has given traditional Turkish fare a modern twist.
