Undisputed darling of London’s East End scene, womenswear designer Gareth Pugh has pushed the fashion boundaries to limits the likes of which have never been seen. Taking his cue from the performance-art-meets-fashion approach – reminiscent of British powerhouses such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen – Pugh’s experimental work has garnered him international critical praise. British Vogue proclaimed ‘his genius is undeniable’ and Dazed & Confused used a piece from his 2003 graduate collection on its front cover. Despite his six years in the business and countless celebrity accolades, Pugh’s challenging avant-garde designs are yet to gain him much commercial success – refreshingly, however, this does little to impede his potent creative drive. Using materials ranging from PVC to chainmail, Perspex to synthetic hair, Pugh’s innovative approach struggles to find worthy comparison among his piers.
