Volvo is striving to push through a sleek new design direction without losing their tank-like image. The XC60 is the first project helmed by recently appointed design director Steve Mattin, and is a taster of next year’s mid-size SUV (the must-have model slot that every car maker is striving to fill). The XC60 is beefy without excessive bulk, the chunky metal detailing curved into recognisable new Volvo-esque shapes, with angled lights front and rear, and a tricksy split tailgate. Inside, the gear-shifter has been superseded by a mouse-like device, all the better to entrap the tech-savvy urban professionals who are expected to flock to this model in droves.
