Back in 1978, Saab launched the 99 Turbo, one of the very first production cars to be fitted with a turbo device. 'Turbo' swiftly became a byword for laddish behaviour and not-so-subtle styling, the perfect match for the materialist 1980s.
But while the image might have been tarnished by lesser imitations, Saab never stopped turbo-charging. In certain situations the process remains the most efficient way of squeezing more horsepower from a smaller engine, and in this eco-minded age, that's not to be sniffed at.
Enter the Turbo X, a Saab with a moniker that seems more at home in a Japanese video arcade than on a car built to steam across the Swedish landscape. Limited to 2,000 units, the Turbo X celebrates three decades of turbo-charged Saabs.
The car also adds a new form of all-wheel drive into the mix, XWD, which switches power between front and rear, and both rear wheels to ensure grip is maximised at all times.
