Why release one fragrance, pour femme or pour homme, when you can release twelve, pour les deux? This is likely to have been the thought running through Tom Ford’s head when he came-up with the concept for ‘Private Blend’, his latest project in the world of beauty.
‘Private Blend’ consists of twelve unisex fragrances, each developed with a back to basics approach. Instead of a plethora of top, heart and base notes, the idea behind each fragrance is to focus on a single top note, enhanced and complemented by a small handful of secondary notes. So for example; Black Violet has a top note of black violet with a single, secondary note of oakmoss, whilst Tuscan Leather has a top note of leather, complemented by black suede, amberwood and night-blooming jasmine.
The result is twelve very traditional, classic and unisex fragrances, a million miles away from the one-scent-suits-all approach of most modern fragrances. And, as with all of Ford’s projects, the fragrances are deeply attractive to look at. Inspired by the rich brown glass of apothecary bottles used by parfumier’s of old, they come in two sizes: the 50ml flacon - architectural and functional - or the sizeable and weighty 250ml decanter.
