Jo Malone Kohdo Wood Collection

Beauty

Jo Malone, the lady behind the eponymous modern classic fragrance and lifestyle line has bowed out of the company she began, and consulted on, after its sale to Estee Lauder in 1999. So keen noses have been waiting to assess if the understated elegance and innovation that the brand became known for will endure after her departure.

The signs are good. The most recent launch explores an ancient Japanese scenting ceremony, Kohdo, and interprets it in two contrasting but complementary richly woody scents. The first is a light day time-friendly blend of lotus blossom and water lily, bamboo and aloeswood. Called simply Lotus Blossom and Water Lily, it is, as with all Jo Malone scents, designed to have a well-being effect - if you are lucky, confidence, energy and focus should flow.

The second, Dark Amber and Ginger Lily (pictured), which comes in the first black bottle the company has ever produced, is an after-hours blend of amber and ginger lily, cardamom, orchid and kyara wood. And the best bit - it is designed to encourage calm and positive thoughts (can it really be as easy as a quick spritz?)

Jo Malone was an early proponent of fragrance combining, and whereas in the past it has been left to the adventurous to experiment in finding two or more scents to layer to their taste, the Kohdo collection is pre-prescribed perfect pairing. We would suggest that they actually smell most interesting when worn together. But can’t predict where the conflicting spells of energy and calm they cast might leave you.
