Yuri Masnyj exhibition

Wallpaper* devotees will be aware of the work of Yuri Masnyj, who designed our limited edition cover for Wallpaper* 87 in April last year. For those who aren’t so familiar, the American artist is showing his latest sculptures in conjunction with the detailed drawings from his previous exhibition at Metro Pictures in New York this summer.

‘The Night Is Young’, the title of Masnyj’s latest exhibition marks a progression into the third dimension from his show, ‘A World of Interiors’, in 2004. The meticulous, detailed drawings of the latter exhibition that were part Cubist, part Constructivist in composition, have become sculptures for ‘The Night is Young’. Masnyj describes them as 'rooms with a view or views with a room, I’m not always sure in which order.'

The panoramic narrative of the sculptures is particularly pleasing when seen alongside the two dimensional drawings. There’s a distinctly modernist feel to both; partly in the predominately grey, black and red colour scheme, but also in the graphic casting of the objects that comprise each sculpture. The bottles, books, bookcases, pedestals and cones together create the paradoxical impression of chaos and order at the same time.
