When word spread that British artist Terry Haggerty had been commissioned to decorate the walls of the Munich Re offices in the City of London, we leapt at the opportunity to have exclusive access to the installation process. Susanne Ehrenfried was the art consultant for the project, which features a number of German and British artists’ work throughout the offices. Haggerty’s involvement spreads across six walls that run through the office either side of the atrium, in which his seventh, and largest installation is housed.

We’ve long been fans of Haggerty’s work - the retro geometric wall patterns defy the flat surfaces on which they’re painted, creating an optical illusionary effect with a mesmerising quality. But unlike some artists who play with optical illusions on a grand scale, there’s nothing hypnotic or headache inducing about Haggerty’s simple designs. He builds-up surfaces with multiple layers of paint and masking tape, hence why we were so keen to chart the progress of one installation, in an attempt to see exactly how it’s done.
