Photographer Stephen Gill specialises in capturing the flipside of our hurried urban environment; the backs of billboards, the beautiful chaos of roadworks and portraits of perplexed strangers being shown the way. His latest series taps into our delight at finding the unexpected, a genre boosted by legions of internet-based fans of ephemera.
Having taken a series of images on Hackney Wick, Gill then buried the prints, letting nature take its course for a few weeks to mark the surface accordingly, alter the chemicals and distort the colours. The book reproduces the full set of unearthed images in all their randomised glory, along with its own artfully muddied slip-case.
There's even an envelope included for you to conduct your own experiments in subterranean developing.
