This week marks the opening of the latest player on the contemporary art scene, the stunning new Museion in Bolzano, Italy. Designed by Berlin architects KSV Krüger Schuberth Vandreike, the glass and metal cube-like structure, a wonderfully daring exercise in stark modernism amidst the low roofs and majestic mountains of the small northern city, spans five levels and incorporates extensive gallery space, workshops, a library, and adjoining residences for visiting artists. The museum's goal is to facilitate an environment of creative experimentation, collaboration and, of course, exhibition.

Kicking off the show and running until September will be Peripheral Vision and Collective Body, an event bringing together an extensive collection of post-WWII work from across disciplines including art, film, performance and text, to examine the notion of ‘collective bodies’ and the interaction of different art forms in a contemporary visual context. Following in October will be an art show centering on the alt rock band Sonic Youth.
The international competition to build the museum was launched back in 2001 by the local province and attracted 285 submissions. Construction on the 54 x 25 meter structure commenced in 2005. Photos of the construction and the finished building, along with stills from the inaugural show, can be viewed in our gallery above.
