Paul Schuitema's name might not be as familiar as the other inter-war modernists, but his aesthetic is unmistakable. Mixing typography with furniture design (as well as film-making and the occasional painting and sculpture), Schuitema's work typifies an era when pure form was everywhere, even on a packet of smoked sausages or an oil can.
This inspirational simplicity went hand in hand with the new photography, of which Schuitema was an accomplished practitioner, able to eke the abstract and dramatic out of a handful of nails or a kitchen gadget. Add in his progressive politics and iconic tubular framed chairs, and you have a fine portrait of a true Renaissance modernist.
