There are many practical reasons for re-using existing structures, note Wallpaper’s House Editor Emma O’Kelly and Corinna Dean in their new book, Conversions.

Eschewing the crunchy, ad hoc nature of many residential adaptations, Conversions is all about the unabashed juxtaposition of old and new, with sleek contemporary insertions sitting comfortably alongside the old.

Featuring a range of work from rural projects – no bland barn conversions here – to urban designs and large-scale apartment complexes, Conversions points to a future free from the clichéd loft apartment. Ultimately, it demonstrates that a residential re-imagining can be far more avant-garde than a new build property.
