There is a clear difference between the houses most of us live in, the houses most of us would like to live in, and the houses that actually exist. And even though shifting demographics and bulging cities mean that more houses and households are needed than ever before, the gulf between desires and reality has become wider and wider.
Simply to build is a test of resolve and endurance. The city - London, perhaps, in particular - provides architects with more challenges than any other environment. HausWork* is a series of talks looking at imaginative responses to those challenges, as architects try to bridge the gap between wants and needs against a backdrop of increasing public awareness of their role.
Four themes will be covered over four consecutive weeks- townhouses, the challenge of context, new apartments and extensions - which will accommodate a variety of scales and different approaches.
In each session, two young practices, chosen from Wallpaper's forthcoming August 2008 Architects Directory, our guide to the most innovative and exciting global practices, will present an urban project. This will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session with the audience.
Following each talk in the HausWork* series, Wallpaper* would like to invite the audience to join us for a complimentary glass of Champagne Taittinger.
