Walls are coming down – literally – at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, marking the start of a year long process to construct a stunning new rooftop garden and outdoor exhibition space atop the museum's adjoining car park structure. The new area, designed by San Francisco-based Jensen Architects and comprising 14,400 square feet in total, will connect to the main building's fifth floor galleries via a glass-enclosed bridge.

In similar fashion to the ground floor Sculpture Garden at MOMA in New York, this new space will function both as a showcase for sculptural art and a tranquil resting spot amidst the bustle of urban San Francisco. Like the NYC space, partially visible to passing pedestrian traffic, the outdoor gallery at SFMOMA seeks to create a more natural connection between the museum and its surrounds.

The interior of the sky bridge will be visible from the street, giving passers-by a sense of the building's interior life and a glimpse of the art displayed on the bridge's wall. A large panoramic window overlooking the garden will also replace the entire back wall of the museum's fifth floor, adding extra light and offering a dramatic outside view – in all, an exciting addition in the lead up to the museum's 75th anniversary in 2010.
