Interactive Floorplan: Cube House by AR arquitetos
This small house in São Paulo is Marina Acayaba and Juan Pablo Rosenberg's first realised project with their joint practice, AR.q. Tucked between much taller buildings on the site of an older and derelict townhouse in the city's Pompeia neighbourhood, Cube House tellingly takes its name from its markedly cube-inspired form.
The house's concept is as simple as its shape. Designed to be the home of an as-yet childless couple, the architects planned everything around a centrally located kitchen and integrated living area, which the couple see as their main social hub.
With an expansive brief but a small footprint of only slightly over 90 square meters, the house had to be designed as compactly and cleverly as possible. Hosting friends often and looking forward for their family to grow, the clients required two bedrooms, which were placed on the top floor. As the couple work from home, an office space was another requirement. The workspace was placed in the basement, including room for a comfortable built-in library.
Faced with contradictory needs - the clients asked for privacy but also an open garden - the architects designed the house to appear closed towards the publicness of the street with an open but private rear courtyard, circulating light and air into the interior.
Envisioned as a composition of cubic forms, the house's façades are dominated by the six meters cubed white box defining the house's exterior outline. This opens up to terraces offering glimpses to the clean white interior, while a smaller three meter cubed box defines the garage space.
