Beyond Bawa is deceptively titled, for the first half of this monograph presents a detail-rich overview of the life and work of Geoffrey Bawa, the late architect responsible for the genre now known as 'Tropical Modernism'.
While the Bawa style has since been distilled into a hip hotel aesthetic of wenge wood and waving palms, one shouldn't overlook the Sri Lankan architect's ability to translate vernacular style into a modernist idiom. Bawa died in 2003, and the second half of Robson's book looks at contemporary interpretations of the style he established.
