In 2003, the city of Santo André, a few minutes drive from São Paulo, started work on the Sabina School project, a complex combining a museum for the arts and sciences. Intended as a boost for the city's arts and education infrastructure, the new complex houses diverse activities and events for children and families, as well as a school, all set within one of the city’s main public parks.
The commission went to Pritzker-prize winning architect Paulo Mendes de Rocha, together with MMBB Arquitetos. The team united the different activities with a strong visual element, a 160m-long large-scale beam running through the entire complex. Featuring furniture designed by Brasil Arquitetura, the complex is also blessed with a mix of public spaces, from green gardens to stone-paved plazas and inner courtyards.
