Architecture

From 1973 until his death in 1994, the American artist Donald Judd constructed a minimalist fiefdom from a collection of former artillery sheds and warehouses in the remote Texan town of Marfa.

Now an established place of architectural pilgrimage, the Marfa structures represent the intersection between Judd’s sculpture and his pursuit of a precise, reduced architecture.

The ultimate expression of Judd’s aesthetic is perhaps Las Casas of Ayala de Chinati, a ranch located deep in the desert outside the town, a place of covered spaces and blank, circular walls, enclosing and framing the desert, with the interior furniture arrangements as precisely considered as every last brick.
