Architecture

While perhaps not noted as a country that has a heritage of domestic architectural excellence, Australia has its gems, as shown in 50/60/70: Iconic Australian Houses.

After World War II, a new prosperity and, to a lesser extent, the arrival or émigré architects from Europe saw design flourish, particularly in Melbourne and Sydney. Unfortunately, many of the best examples of this period have been altered or demolished, but author and magazine editor Karen McCartney has collected the best of those that still exist in their original form and with authentic interiors.

From Harry Seidler’s celebrated Rose Seidler House (1950) to Ian Collin’s fibreglass home set among Sydney bushland, built in 1976, the influences of European and Japanese architects can be seen contrasted against a unique environment. Other architects featured include Roy Grounds, Neville Gruzman, Hugh Buhrich and Robin Boyd, with all homes beautifully photographed by Michael Wee.
