Thomas Demand was born in Munich in 1964. Based now in Berlin, he is one of the most internationally renowned and respected artists of his generation. His art consists of photographs of scenes that have an uncanny resemblance to real life but with a distinctly artificial distortion. Demand achieves this effect by reconstructing life-size scenes and settings in his studio from existing images, which he then photographs. He has shown at the Fondazione Prada in Venice, the MoMA in New York and most recently at the Neue Nationalgalerie in his hometown of Berlin.
