David Shrigley

Glasgow-based David Shrigley was born in Macclesfield in 1968. He graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1991 and has since become one of the greatest ‘outsider artists’ of his generation. Known principally for his scratchily captioned cartoons, depicting the inane, absurd and incidental in everyday life, Shrigley’s macabre and humorous characters have achieved cult following. From daily newspapers to animations and solo exhibitions around the world, he has achieved that rare thing in the contemporary art world – widespread crossover appeal and critical acclaim in equal measure. He is represented by the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London and Yvon Lambert
in Paris.

From 1 Februrary – 13 May 2012 London’s Hayward Gallery presents the first major UK survey of Shrigley’s work. 'David Shrigley: Brain Activity' covers the full range of the artist’s diverse output over the past two decades, including drawing, animation, painting, photography, taxidermy and sculpture.
