Valentino had the going-away party of all going-away parties in Rome this July, with a three-day star-studded weekend extravaganza of gala dinners, a ball, the opening his retrospective exhibition at the Richard Meier-designed Ara Pacis, and his Fall couture show, something we will never forget.
Today, his last ready-to-wear show, although full of perfectly fine Valentino frocks, didn’t have the same feeling of closure for the end of his career (it’s not quite the end, there is one more couture show to go, in January).
He showed lots of fine pretty dresses, some exploring details he developed for the couture, like the fluttering disks of cloth-trimming hems and cuffs like ruffles. It was very upbeat and very young, spoilt only by the unnecessary quantity of not-terribly-good bags (not the same standard as the dresses, any way) carried by models.
The maestro will be sadly missed in Paris, but as he said himself in July, so many of his dresses from the 60s, 70s, and 90s (he blanks out the 80s) can still be worn today, there is still plenty of Valentino to go around.
