Alexander McQueen, Autumn/Winter '08 (scroll down to read the review)
Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen took us to the outskirts of Milan for his show, just a stones throw from Linate Airport. Fittingly, McQueens invite comprised of a picture of a jet propeller in the clouds with the programme notes running like an itinerary of a jam-packed four-week trip. With a route that took in large parts of India, Bhutan and Nepal before travelling back to Delhi and catching the BA142 flight to Heathrow (yes, he was that specific), it was clear that travel was to play a major part in his show.
The show conveyed the ethos that travel broadens ones mind, and in particular reflected how travel has influenced McQueen. Indicating that for the creative talent there is no such thing as a holiday, McQueen mixed up his own experiences of global shopping to inspire his look.
Combining travel elements with his signature razor-sharp tailoring, McQueen managed to blur the idea of origin. For example, rich brocades were adorned with chains of safety pins. However, the most wanted piece was a v-neck sweater with embroidery that ran down the sleeve from the shoulder to the elbow.
