Margaret Howell’s Studio Show was clean, spare, easy and just like the gathers and ruffles on her blouses, studied and so perfectly refined. Howell’s work evolves, she calls it a ‘progression’ and progress for her is the continual refinement of staple pieces, like the high and wide pants in washed poplin that ticked all the boxes for Wallpaper*’s Fashion Director.
There was a postwar British air to it, no surprise from Howell, the tireless champion of postwar modernist design, like the Ercol furniture, Robin Welch tableware and Studio pottery she shows in her Wigmore Street store alongside her clothes.
She seems to have taken this spirit and aesthetic that she loves so much and translated it into easy and functional yet beautiful pieces with a 1940s nod, with Howell never too much or too heavy.
