Shanghai Design Centre, Showroom, Shanghai, 2008
HISTORY
Lip Chiong and Annie Chung studied together at Londons Architectural Association and worked at Arup's Advanced Geometry Unit before setting up Studio Twist. They're best known for designing the Shanghai Design Centre, which displays high-end furniture from companies such as Cassina and Zanotta.
APPROACH
Were a concept-driven practice, says Chiong, so we observe how our concept works in day to day operations and brings greater meanings to the client. We like to think that we create original buildings and spaces.' Whilst at AGU they developed the Twist building, originally part of the abandoned Balmond masterplan for Battersea Power Station. The client subsequently asked for the building to be redeveloped as a library in Chaozhou province, kick-starting their solo career (although it was only built as a virtual model).
FUTURE
Current projects include a suite of structures designed for several Chinese cities. Studio Twist think that the post-boom years will bring more socially aware and visually discerning clients, keen to go beyond mere symbolism and define a national style.
